THE JEFFERSON MEMORIAL

The Jefferson Memorial is a presidential memorial that is dedicated to Thomas Jefferson, an American Founding Father and the third President of the United States. It is a round, open building with a bronze statue of Thomas Jefferson in the middle. Around him, on the walls, some of his most famous speeches are inscribed. This Memorial has very good acoustics and choirs often go and sing there.

THE WHITE HOUSE

For more than 200 years it has been the home and main workplace of the US President. It is always busy, there are people from the press in the garden all the time, so tourists wait outside the gate thinking that in a few seconds the President will come out. But most of the time nothing happens. The press people are just standing by in case something happens. A bit outside the main area there is the FBI Building, where you can see exhibitions about investigation techniques concerning famous gangsters.

Although President G. Washington oversaw the construction of the house, he never lived in it. It was not until 1800, when the White House was nearly completed, that its first residents, President John Adams and his wife, Abigail, moved in.The first president who lived there was John Adams. President Theodore Roosevelt officially gave the White House its current name in 1901. The White House is open to the public, free of charge.

There are 132 rooms, 3 elevators, a tennis court, jogging track, swimming pool, movie theatre, and bowling lane. White House receives 2,500 – 3,500 phone calls per day, 1,000 faxes per day, 100,000 e-mails per day and 65,000 paper letters per week (only 10 of these are being read by the President himself). The most famous room is the Oval Office – President´s office. Approximately 6,000 people visit White House every day. There are five full-time chefs employed able to serve dinner up to 1000 guests.

Pennsylvania Avenue

Pennsylvania Avenue is a street in Washington, D.C. that joins the White House and the United States Capitol. Called "America's Main Street", it is the place of official parades and processions, as well as protest marches.

Arlington National Cemetery

It´s the most famous national cemetery in the USA. It is located on a big farm called Arlington House. Although most of the farm now has graves, the old farmhouse still stands in the middle of the cemetery. The cemetery covers 2.5 km2. People who served in the United States military (= veterans) and people who died in United States wars are buried in the cemetery. The cemetery started during the American Civil War. People who were buried here before the Civil War were reburied after 1900. More than 127,500 people - men from all the armed services and their wives and children - have been buried at Arlington, including men who died in every American war. Some ex-presidents and high officials lie here, too. President Kennedy (and his wife Jacqueline) was buried here because he was commander-in-chief of the armed forces. Part of this cemetery is The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It honours soldiers who died in a war but their bodies were never identified.
