British literature – William Shakespeare

I would like to speak about William Shakespeare. At first I would like to tell you something about his life. The second part will be about his works. The third part will be about Romeo and Juliet.

He was one of the greatest dramatists the world has ever seen.

William Shakespeare was an English poet, playwright and actor. He was born on 23rd April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon as the third children. He is one of the most Britain´s writers and dramatics. In 18 years old he married Ann Hathaway. They had three children. Two daughters (Susan and Judith) and a son Hamnet, who died when he was eleven years old.

Four years after marrying Ann, William decided to leave to London. There he became an actor. At first he rewrote and edited older plays. Later he started to write his own story.

His early plays were primarily comedies and histories. Then he wrote mainly tragedies, including Hamlet, Othello, King Lear and Macbeth. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies.

He died on the same day as he was born. He was exactly 52 years old. He is buried in the church at Stratford-upon-Avon.

Altogether William Shakespeare wrote thirty seven theatre plays and one hundred and fifty four sonnets – he was also a poet.

His greatest popularity, however, did not come until after his death. Today, his plays and poems are still read throughout the world as an example of the greatest English writer.
