When  other  countries  play  international  sports  against  each  other, 
such as football and cricket, in America there is far greater attention 
on the big cities playing against each other. Even if many sports are 
played in the US, the most popular American ball games are baseball, 
which  is  the  main  summer  sport,  while  in  the  winter  American 
football dominates.

Both baseball and American football are played in every American 
high  school  and  college.  The  best  players  are  then  recruited  into 
professional  teams.  The  ultimate  goal  for  many  young  Americans 
is  to  play  baseball  in  the  World  Series  or  American  football  in  the 
National Football League.

American Baseball
American baseball is divided up into major league and minor league 
baseball.  Major  league  baseball  is  for  professionals.  Hardly  any 
players reach the majors without 
first playing in the minor leagues. 
Many  experts  say  that  minor 
league baseball has become more 
popular over the years because it is 
affordable and fans have a better 
chance  of  seeing  all  the  action 
as  well  as  the  players.  A  minor 
league  baseball  team  nowadays 
is nearly always linked to a major 
league team. This is so that young 
players  can  be  developed  and 
prepared for the big leagues.

Nearly all players spend at least one season in a minor league.
