American football
American football has now taken over as the most popular sport in 
the US. When two teams step onto an American football field, each 
is battling for every inch it can take from the 
other team. Each team has to defend the field 
that it has behind it and invade the field in 
front of it. The aim is to gain enough ground 
so that the team can score a touchdown or 
field  goal.  It  is  a  game  measured  in  inches 
on  a  field  measured  in  yards.  English 
measurements are used to track movements 
on the field. The success of a team is based 
on how many yards it advances. 

The  most  essential  piece 
of  equipment  in  American 
football is the ball which is 
oval and similar to the shape 
of the ball used in rugby that 
they play in Britain. 

While the game time adds up to one hour, it usually takes 3-4 hours 
to  complete  the  game.  It  consists  of  a  series  of  individual  playing 
or  “downs”  of  short  duration,  outside  of  which  the  ball  is  not  in 
play. Each game is also divided into four quarters with an extended 
half time break between quarters two and three. Each quarter is 15 
minutes  long.  If  the  teams  have  scored  the  same  number  of  points 
after four quarters of play, they play an additional overtime period 
of  15  minutes.  This  overtime  period  is  also  called  “sudden  death” 
because the first team to score wins.
