Violent Deaths in the Game of Throne series
My essay will demonstrate the crucial significance of the topic of violent death in the fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire by the American novelist George R. R. Martin, which is adapted by HBO as Game of Thrones. Harriett Jameson’s article (1999, 23-30) describes the significance of various weapons, emphasizing the overarching presence of bows, crossbows, battle axes, clubs, war hammers and catapults. She primarily focuses on the usage of daggers and swords in the book series (1999, 25-30). She claims that swords are often used as decoration in the settings of the book, especially in the various chambers of Winterfell, Riverrun, Red Keep and Castle Black (1999, 26). Jameson also observes that swords can become magic objects, as well, for example in A Clash of Kings (1998), A Storm of Swords (2000) and A Feast for Crows (2005). Most importantly, of course, swords are used as weapons to kill various characters throughout the series (Jameson 1999, 28). She describes in detail how several important characters die as they are fatally wounded by swords (1999, 29-30). Thus, this article gives a prime example of the overarching presence of violent deaths in the Game of Throne series.
