11. Statement implying ‘but …..‘
The voice falls and rises. The fall marks the important information; the rise implies that though the speaker may have made a positive statement, he/she is going to qualify it. He/she may actually say ‘but …..‘ or may simply imply it.
For example: A: Did you have a good holiday?
B: The weather was very good….(but everything else was awful).
A: How was the film you saw? B: The beginning was great but the rest of it was boring.
A:How is your mother? B:She‘s not as ill as she was last week, but she’s still not well.
A: Are you ready to take the test? B. I’ve been working really hard, but I could work even harder.
