FO2BE Credit Test Question Types SS 16/17 P301

There are three parts to the FO2BE credit test.
The answers to parts A and B are filled in online. Once you submit your answers online, you cannot change them. So make sure you have written your answers correctly.

Part C must be written on paper.
If you finish the test early, please wait until you are given permission to leave.

The results of the test will be announced via Moodle at the very latest 7 days after the test was taken.

A. Online Test (60 points)

1) Identify the correct transcription (10 points)

These words are from the FO1BE course. Some of them were transcribed incorrectly in the credit test. Read each word and identify the correct transcription.

2) Minimal Pairs and Phonetics terminology (10 points)

Identify the phoneme described phonetically in the list of minimal pairs

3) Identify words which contain the particular phoneme. (10 points)

4) Transcription to spelling (10 points)

6) Intonation (5 points)

B. Listening. Bring your own headphones if you wish (20 points)

8) Weak and Strong forms (5 points)

You will hear five sentences.
Each sentence contains one of the words in bold below.

Decide whether the word you hear is in its strong or weak form.

9) Sentence stress (5 points)

You will hear one sentence pronounced in five different ways.
The focus of each sentence is different depending upon where the main sentence stress is placed. Look at the sentence, then play each recording.
Decide what the speaker is communicating to his interlocutor.

10) Intonation (5 points)

You will hear five sentences.

Each has a different pitch pattern.
Decided what message the speaker is communicating to his listener.

11) Pre-fortis clipping (5 points)
You will hear two words.
Decide whether the first word or the second word has pre-fortis clipping.

C. Transcription on Paper (20 points)

This part of the test will be written on a separate piece of paper. Students will be provided with paper. Do not use any devices (eg mobile phones) to help you with transcription. Write clearly. If you make a mistake, cross out the transcription and write it again.

12) Transcription (10 points)

Transcribe ten words using the standard phonemic symbols we have used during this course.
