Pronunciation Tips
Note the pronunciation of plurals or third person singular of the verb.
As you know, regular plurals are spelled with the letter “s“.
1. Most plural or third person singular forms –s will be pronounced as /z/
For example: peas, bears, fears, plays, scares, Jews, knees, lies
2. However, if the singular noun or infinitive of the verb (ie. the original word minus -s) ends with these voiceless consonants: /p/, /k/, /f/,/θ/, then the final letter -s is pronouced /s/
For example: stop – stops, kick – kicks, laugh – laughs, death – deaths all end in /s/.
3. If the noun or verb ends in /s/, /z/ /ʃ/, /ʒ/(rarely in final position), or /ʧ/, /ʤ/ the plural or third person singular is written – es. This is pronounced /ɪz/.
For example: bus-es, buzz-es, wash-es, rouges (rare), watch-es, bridg-es.
4. The letter c is never /z/. It is /s/ price, /k/ cake, or /ʧ/ when followed by h eg. chair, chin.
5. The letter z is never /s/. It is always /z/ eg. buzz, prize. Only in the word azure is z /ʒ/.
