David Leavitt - Territoryopening scene: Neil and his mother are awaiting the arrival of Neilʼs lover
Wayne
situated in:
several retrospectives (flashbacks) - how he realised he is homosexual, how he
told his parents, how he met his first boyfriend Luis and they went on the pride
parade, then it continues in the present
Barbara Cambell: formal, proper, leads a quiet life, prejudices, tries to be
supportive (does not criticise him, joins the society for parents having gay kids,
becomes a president after a year) but fights her own judgements about
homosexuality
his father: not much mentioned, just briefly when he is coming out, and with the
connection to Barbara That she is not divorced and not a widow) - not very
great impact on his life
Neil: shameful, tries to embrace his sexuality
Wayne: seems to have a great relationship with Neilʼs mother, can call her
Barbara, seems caring and loving
Luis: attractive but repulsive? Neil does not have the courage to break up with

the problem in the cinema Neil puting arm around Wayne and his mother), the
mother has a problem with that: “I can only take so muchˮ - her son is
physically repulsive because of his orientation, or that she does not want to be
included in Wayne and Neil touching (even though Neil feels itʼs normal, wants
to include his mother)
Dave Eggers - the CircleMae - not likable, accept anything, easily manipulated
company culture - this system is brought to perfection
the customer feedback rating system - tendency to formalism - only number is

sheʼs not told ahead what is going to happen - the sychronization with cloud,
swallowing the sensor to be able to see her medical info
The Woman who believed in JaguarsRuth Welborn - married to Richard (was married), only child - likes to be alone
and not speaking (had to adjust to being married and having someone by her
side non-stop), likes reading
collects flyers of missing children (in the story, she even calls police once when
she thinks she found the kidnapped child - she is not right and the mother is
pissed)
works in an office, but does not talk with her colleagues much - she thinks
when she would disappear, no one could describe her
had a child, but it only lived for 4 hours - she cannot move on, her husband
could (took a job in Atlanta - so they were seeing each other less and less)
takes place in South Carolina
she becomes obsessed with jaguars she thinks she saw once a picture of it in a
texbook years ago - she calls to zoo and makes an appointment to ask whether

there are any jaguars in south CA, trying to find "if there is anything left inside
her mind she can believe." She uncovers a time when South Carolina was lit by
the colors and flight of thousands of parrots, and she finds a lone jaguar, where
"a tree limb rises toward her like an outstretched hand." - only one old source
tells there are, then she sees one and falls asleep on a bench
