Antibiotics - medicines that fight bacterial infections, they work by killing the bacteria or by making it hard for the bacteria to grow and multiply
Antibiotic resistance - bacteria develop defences against the antibiotics
Superbugs - germs that can't be stopped by medication
preclinical stage of developing drugs - includes discovery, animal testing, patent application
clinical stage of developing drugs - includes human testing (small to large-scale)
placebo - it looks like tested drug, but contains no active substances, expected to have no effect on patients
blind trial - patients don't know whether they are taking placebo or the drug
double-blind trial - neither the researchers nor the patients know who is taking the placebo and who is taken drug
step up - accelerate, speed up
