when motor gets energized at a speed approaching the synchronous speed -> rotor is pulled into synchronism
Auxiliary motor
for short-term running
motor is phased to the system like an alternator
after the synchronous motor is connected to the system -> the auxiliary motor will get disconnected

Design due to the growth in automation engineering
Special synchronous motor operating in synchronism with incoming pulses
One pulse arrives in the input -> the rotor rotates through a certain angle (step) + stops
pulses coming gradually = rotor rotates + stops in steps => stepping in synchronism with pulses
