10. READING BOOKS

* BENEFITS OF READING

- in comparison with the passive consumption of TV culture, fading is a highly active and useful hobby

- most people read just for relaxation, others look for information and advice

- you gain knowledge, vocabulary expansion, improved focus and concentration, better writing skills

- information - you can find an answer to many questions, people can be thoroughly educated through books

- geography - book help us to learn about foreign countries as well as exotic places

- values - through reading people learn what is good and valuable in life, as well as what is bad and worthless

- empathy - we sometimes find that humans lives are a mirror of our soul, we learn to emphasize with others

- behaviour - we can learn how to behave without hurting others or ourselves, and how to live in harmony on Earth

- imagination - reading improves our imagination, it helps us tee thinks in new way

- language and vocabulary - when people read a lot, they start appreciating the beauty of language, reading increases

our vocabulary and develops our word power

* BOOKS / FILMS / MODERN TECHNOLOGY – COMPARE

- the book is better in my opinion, because you take them with you on holidays, read when travelling or on the beach

and they last much longer - if it is a good book then you really enjoy it and you can re-read your favourite parts

- films are usually much shorter, and it is up to the director to decide how to approach the original story

- directors may have their own personal style or just have a different view of the book, and this may make the film

unattractive for us as the hero we have always imagined when reading the book suddenly comes out a totally

different person

- the Internet is also no bad - you can find everything there, you don’t have to go and search for the book in the

library or bookshop, but on the other hand you can take you book anywhere

- literature we can divide into two categories fiction and non-fiction

- non-fiction: textbooks, guidebooks, cookbooks, atlas, encyclopaedia, autobiography, biography, diary

- fiction: we can divide into prose, poetry and drama

-> prose (fairytales, novels, short stories, tales, legends, sci-fi, adventure book, detective (whodunits),

horrors, thriller, romances)

where to gets books?

- bookshop, book stalls, second hand shops

- public/school library

- to belong to a book club (not popular nowadays)

- to subscribe to a book/magazine

- library card, pay a yearly fee
