was a leading Czech 

dissident against the 

communist regime. He was 

also an internationally known 

playwright. Shortly after the 

Velvet Revolution, he 

became the first president of 

the independent Czech 

Republic. In this position, he 

served from 1993 to 2003. 

In 2011, he died at the age 

of 75. He had a close 

relationship with many 

famous politicians around 

the world, including the Dalai 

Lama, a leading Tibetan
