HOLIDAYS AND CELEBRATIONS
Holidays and celebrations are very important parts of culture, and both Great Britain and the United States have many traditions and celebrations.
New Year's Eve + New Year's Day
New Year's Eve (31st December) and New Year's Day (1st January) are celebrated with parties, countdown to midnight, fireworks, and gatherings (especially set targets). People often make resolutions for the new year and spend time with friends and family to welcome a new start.
Easter (March/April)
The most important spring holidays. Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus and is a Christian tradition, and it's also widely known for cultural customs. People decorate eggs, have Easter egg hunts, and eat chocolate bunnies. A lot of families bake a pastry (Hot cross buns). Children often receive chocolate eggs or small gifts.
Halloween (October 31st)
Is popular in both the USA and the UK. People, and especially children, dress up in costumes, go trick-or-treating, and people decorate their houses with pumpkins, ghosts, and spiders. In the USA, Halloween is often a bigger celebration with parties, parades, and even themed events for adults.
Thanksgiving (fourth Thursday of November - US, second Monday of October - Canada)
It's celebrated mainly in the US and Canada. It's a time for families and friends to come together and give thanks for everything they have. The most important part of the holiday is the meal (roast turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie). People often spend the time talking, playing games, and enjoying each other's company. It's also known for parades or for watching football games on TV.
Christmas (25th December)
On Christmas, families usually decorate Christmas trees, exchange gifts, and have special meals. In the UK, Christmas dinner includes roast turkey, vegetables, and Christmas pudding. In the USA, the food is similar, with roast turkey, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie. Christmas is also a Christian celebration, when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. It's a very important family holiday, and people often spend together the whole day.
