19 Holidays and Festivals

1) Festivals in GB (St. Valentine´s Day, All Fools´ Day, Halloween, Bonfire Night, New Year´s Eve, St. Patrick´s Day)

  • St. Valentines day – 14th february – it is lovers day – On this day people send Valentine cards to a person. The cards have loving or serious contens. On Valentines Day, couples go on dates or buy something for each other.

  • All fools Day – 1th April – On April fools Day, people play jokes and tricks on each other and they can shout „April Fool“

  • Halloween – 31th October – All Saints Eve – People dress up in scary costumes. They are carving pumpkins. People believed that the souls of the dead return home on 31th October.

  • Guy Fawkes Day – 5th November – The a mniversary of the Gunpower plot in 1605. They celebrated with bonfires and fireworks

  • New Years Eve – 31th December – The new year is celebrated. They celebrate it at parties, in the city, usually until the morning. At the same time, they make or watch fireworks.

  • St. Ptrick Day – 17th March – Festival on tribute of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. People are dressed in green and dace and play in the streets and drink green beer.

2) Festivals in USA (Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day)

  • Independence day : 4th July – Each city has its own ceremony and parades, band concerts and fireworks in the evening.

  • Thanks giving Day – 23th November – People thanks for their lives and country. Families get together and have a festival dinner.

3) Christmas in CR x in GB / USA

  • Christmas in CR – People eat christmas cookies, watch fairy tales, sing cards.Betlement also belong to Christmas inCzech Republic. According to Czech tradition, Jesus carry gifts. Czech eat carp and potato salad for dinner. The Christmas tree and mistletoe decorated for Christmas.

  • Christmas in GB – Father Christmas carry gifts in England. On christmas Day, children hang stockings on the fireplace, where they will find gift. Children write letters to Fathers Christmas, throw them into the fireplace so that he flies to the North Pole. For dinner, the English eat turkey walmst stuffing and pudding. They also decorate the Christmas tree. In the us they have Santa Claus.

  • Mainly toys, for example dolls or stuffed animals.

5) Do you like giving presents? Why

  • Yes, like to make people happy.

6) What do you think about giving money instead of buying a real present?

  • When I was a child, of course I wanted materiál gifts. Now I prefer money because I can buy whatever I want.

7) Easter in CR x in GB / USA

  • Easter in CR – On Easter Monday, boys and men go caroling after singing the carol they get a painted egg from the women. There is lent before Easter. Peope are bake a lamb. The main decoration of Easter is the bunny.

  • Easter in GB – On Saturday, families come together and decorate Easter eggs then hide them around the house in the garden and on Sunday morning the children search for them. Acoording to tradition, the Easter bunny hides them.
