5. Injuries and first aidApart from catching a disease, people often get injured or wounded (wounds are usually
caused by a weapon). Again, some injuries are not so serious but many can have serious
consequences and require immediate treatment. The sooner we help the injured person,
the better is the chance for recovery.
Some common injuries include:
broken bones (fractures), bruises, scratches, twisted/sprained ankle or wrist, blisters,
pulled muscles, grazed knees, bumps, insect stings, cuts, etc.
In case of an accident, it might be more dangerous, especially when the person is bleeding,
unconscious or is not breathing. Then we need to call an ambulance and you should give the
person first aid. It means that you should try to stop the bleeding and start cardio-
pulmonary resuscitation (CPR=mouth-to-mouth breathing + chest compressions) if
necessary. Of course, the first aid we should give depends on the type of the injury. For
example, first aid for a sprained ankle includes rest, ice, compression, and elevation (known as
RICE).
