Computer and the Internet
Most people have access to the Internet on their computers and can log on and be online
any time of the day.
Popular means of internet communication are social networking sites such as Facebook or
Twitter which are useful for posting messages to friends and sharing photos or videos. Users
of these social networks create their profiles and then upload their personal information.
They add friends to their contact lists and then they can view their profiles.
Some young people spend too much time on social networking sites and are addicted to
them - they are real addicts. They get lost in Facebook – they lose sense of time, forget to
eat, ignore the family and friends, ignore school and work. Some of them have several
conversations going on at the same time.
The problem is that network world is not real, but addicts might treat the online world as the
real world – they do not distinguish between the real and virtual world.
They might have a problem to give up their addiction. They are not able to give themselves a
time limit, e.g. an hour a day, and stick to it.
The internet doesn´t have only benefits, but there are also dangers:
-
Children can see pornography and dangerous and bloody situations
-
On dating sites people pretend to be someone who they are not
-
Users violate copyright of artists when they freely download their work
-
Dangerous viruses can destroy your computer
-
Hackers can steal your data
-
Bullying – users can be bullied online (which is called cyberbullying).
-
Addiction to the Internet can cause mental problems – people addicted to the
Internet often do not have personal contact with people, do not live the real but
virtual lives.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet over traditional media?
The access to the Internet is not free of charge, you have to pay a fee to your internet
provider. The fee is lower than paying for paper newspapers and magazines daily and pay
radio and television licence/fees. The Internet works both as printed and broadcast media.
On the Internet you read the latest news and find out information at any time of the day
from many sources. The news is more up-to-date, newspapers publish it the next day.
However, some people find it difficult to read from the screen and prefer “paper” media.
They might miss the feel of paper and the comfort of sitting on the sofa with a newspaper or
a magazine in their hands rather than sitting in front of a computer screen.
