The simplest and oldest form of payment is barter – it is exchange of one good or service for
another. In the modern world, methods of payment include money, cheque, debit card,
credit card, bank transfer.
Until recently, paying (in) cash with banknotes and coins was the most common type of
payment for everyday shopping, for meals in restaurants, for services. Nowadays, people
prefer paying by “plastic” money, by debit cards and credit cards. This method of payment is
more comfortable and safer. Debit cards and credits cards are protected by PIN (personal
identification number), so in case of theft, the thief cannot withdraw or spend the money
without knowing the PIN.
When you buy some goods on the internet, you can pay for the goods by online bank
transfer or in cash at the delivery point.
Some people still pay their bills by a postal order at a post office. A postal order must be
filled in and stamped by the post office and the payer is given a slip of the postal order as a
confirmation.
People often buy a bigger purchase on credit. This is credit purchase. The customer does not
pay for the product at the time of purchase but in future as it is said in his schedule of
payments. Sometimes the customer has to pay a certain amount of the price at the time of
purchase and the rest in future.
Traveller´s cheques are often used instead of cash by people who travel abroad. You buy
them in a bank in a world currency, for example in dollars or pound, or euros.
You can pay for goods by invoice. You receive the goods first and pay later either in cash or
by bank transfer from your account.
