Kate Chopin – Désirée’s Baby
19th century female writer
She didn’t want to be a writer initially
She lost many members of her family
She married rich plantation owner who had land in Louisiana
She lived during the Civil war - She was a particant?? of the south
She had 6 children, life seemed to be very comfortable and easy
All she had to do was raise children and supervise servants
But her husband died so she was supposed to run the business – the plantation – she hadn’t training, very quickly she became bankrupt → from rich woman she became a poor woman
Luckily she had her talent – good at writing
She became journalist - that’s how she made living
She wrote short stories
She published a novel that destroyed her reputation – The Awakening – it was considered a scandalous novel – the main character was very much like Kate Chopin herself – rich woman with family but there is no emotional bond, no love between her and husband, the main character realizes that her life can’t bring her happiness, the end is ambiguous – she dies – but we don’t know if it is a suicide or if something happened to her
Scandalous because woman wanted to be happy, to be pleased sexually, to leave her family, to commit suicide
She didn’t write anything after this novel
In the 60’s of 20th century to be “rediscovered”
She is considered to represent Louisiana – Louisiana inspired her
