Consequences:
Children forgot their own language
Good – literacy increased – ability to read and write for Native Americans
Writers wrote in English because it was only language they could write and also there weren’t any publications in their language
They participated in the cultural life of the country
1968 – Scott Mommaday – he got Pulitzer Prize – House Made of Dawn = beginning of the morning – expression from Native American chant → this prize means lot of visibility – general public realized that Natives still exist and they are smart, they can write → this is called “Native American renaissance”
Personality of Natives was recognized
James Welch – he was a lawyer and very good novelist
Leslie Marmon Silko – she became famous with Yellow Woman
This happened in 1960’
Who are the most visible? – Those who write in English
Originally Native Americans didn’t write, they had culture, they “přenášeli” stories orally
There are writers who use both languages, also there are those who use only their native language
Yellow Woman
The title – Yellow woman = mother nature – goddess – exactly as mother nature – in spring it gives birth to plants, animals that slept wakes up, all world begin to grow
In autumn nature dies
Human life is the same – we grow, we develop, we have children, we grow old and we die
No indication of space and time
Indication of space, time and names we can find in European literature
The story begins in a shocking way – she doesn’t tell if they had sex or not but we would suggest that
We are curious if they did or not – it is a writer’s strategy
Normally we would use nouns and then pronouns – here it is different – My thigh clung to his with dampness. – we go from unknown to known → it is called “deixis” – she uses it to make us curious, names aren’t important, it can be about every man and every woman
Nature need ka’tsina spirit to produce
Corral = stable – where the horses are kept
pueblo = village x Pueblo = nation (native American)
River = life
The flow of river = flow of time
“Last night you guessed my name” – you guessed that I am ka’tsina spirit
She asks herself if she is really the Yellow woman
Ambiguity about naming is something that has to be explained in terms of Native American culture
They have changes in their names – you get one name and then if you do something good/bad – they give you name, name that only you and your lover know – it creates their personality
In our European culture we have one name and we can’t change it
Every myth is from reality – mix of myth and reality in the whole story
She asks - Is this repetition of the myth? Is this real or not? Is she goddess or real woman?
I felt hungry – when the body gives her real signal – she know she is in real world
Disturbing element is the white farmer – he accuses Silva to stole cattle from his farm
Silva protected the woman – he told her to go away
