Simple X complex verb phrases:
Simple - consists of only one verb which may be present, past, imperative or subjunctive
Complex - consists of two ore more verbs – only one of these verbs is a main verb (the last one) the others are auxiliaries, only one verb is a finite verb – if the verb phrase is finite (the first one), the others are non-finite verbs
Type: A (modal)
B (perfective)
C (progressive)
D (passive)
They further enter into combinations: ABC: may have been examining
ABD: may have been examined
ACD: may be being examined
BCD: has been being examined
ABCD: may have been being examined
