rise of standards like LoRaWAN, LTE-M and NB-IoT
• Lack of fitting IoT technology and standards encourages development
of specialized solutions like Sigfox, LoRaWAN and Ingenu
• In 2016, carrier-driven 3GPP specifies the IoT focused standards LTE-M
and NB-IoT in response
• Today, LPWA providers roll out their networks as quickly as
possible, in order to cover some ground before LTE-M and NB-
IoT are introduced to the market
OTHER LPWA RELATED STANDARDS AND TECHNOLGOIES WORTH MENTIONING
10
LPWA -- SIGFOX
11
SIGFOX – OVERVIEW
12
• French company founded in 2009
• Builds Wireless networks to connect
low energy devices:
• Electricity meters
• Washing machines
• Smart watches, etc
• Uses proprietary technology
• 868MHz in Europe
• 902MHz in US
• Up to 140 messages per day of 12 bytes uplink (not including
header)
• Up to 4 downlink messages per day of 8 bytes (not including
header)
SIGFOX – STAR CONFIGURATION
13
SIGFOX – COVERAGE CZECH REPUBLIC
14
SIGFOX – SUPPORTED IOT DEVICES
15
• Reads pulses from water meters, gas meters, electricity
meters, digital signals etc.
• It can both send information from meters to servers and
receive data from server
• Battery life up to 15 years
LPWA -- LORA(WAN)
16
LORA – OVERVIEW
17
• LoRa = proprietary spread spectrum modulation scheme
developed by Semtech
• Derivative of chirp spread spectrum modulation (CSS)
• LoRaWAN = MAC layer protocol specification built on top of
the LoRa modulation scheme
• US 915-928MHz
• 8 sub-bands of 125kHz channels
• Dedicated uplink and downling channel of 500kHz
• European 863-870MHz and 433MHz bands
• 3x125kHz channels: 868.10, 868.30 and 868.50MHz used
to join network
• During network join, additional channels can be added
• European frequency regulations impose specific duty-
cycles of 1% or lower
LORA – OVERVIEW 2
18
• LoRa was developed in 2014 by Semtech, Actility and IBM
• Communication range: 10 – 30 km
• Battery life up to 3 – 10 years
• One gateway can support up to 20,000 devices
• Data rates in range of 0.3 kbps – 50 kbps
