reasons:

o

age; without reaching a certain age, a parent’s (Britain) or 

court’s (Czech Republic) consent is needed

o

sex

spouses are required to be of opposite sex; same 
sex marriages are allowed only in some countries, 
same sex couples may conclude a registered 
partnership instead

inability to reproduce may lead to inability to enter 
into a marriage

o

lack of sex; if the marriage is not crowned with sexual 

intercourse (hence not consummated)

o

bigamy

o

misrepresentaion

o

blood relaion to a certain degree

divorce

the only way of terminaing a legally valid marriage → legal status 
becomes DIVORCED

U.S. law recognizes two types:

o

fault divorce

one party blames the other for the marriage’s 
failure

o

no-fault divorce (uncontested divorce)

also referred to as dissoluion, i.e. terminaion by 
agreement
