In the Czech Republic we have witnessed the growing influence of extremist parties in recent years. Frequent demonstrations cost the police more and more time, effort and money. The violation of public order also occurs during various cultural events such as concerts, football matches, etc. The police of the Czech Republic must intervene here – effectively, determinedly and within the legal limits.
However, the work of the Czech police involves a number of problems. In order to ensure proper functioning of the police it is essential to obtain the sustained support and confidence of the public. It is more difficult to gain trust when we witness corruption cases, police excesses and other illegal acts of police officers appearing in the media.
Characteristics the police of the Czech Republic
The police of the Czech Republic are an armed security corps that exercises its powers throughout the Czech Republic and is subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior. The police are responsible for ensuring compliance with legal standards and interceding in activities through immediate intervention and factual instructions. In order to perform its duties, the police are entitled to use coercive means, including legally permitted weapons.
The police serve the public and are a guarantee of security and public order. Their importance to society is crucial. They are responsible for preventing crime and bringing offenders to justice. Without police activity, the streets would not be safe, people would be disruptive to public order without fear of punishment, and breaking the law would be commonplace.
The mission of the police is further defined by the Code of Ethics of the Czech Police. The latter is dedicated to ensuring the protection of security and order in society, the protection of the rights and freedoms of individuals, the promotion of lawfulness, and last but not least, the preventive action against criminal and other illegal activities that must be penalized. We must also bear in mind the desire for ongoing public support and confidence the police are trying to achieve. The basic values of the police are professionalism, impartiality, responsibility, thoughtfulness and integrity.1
