Special days, anniversaries

I would like to talk about holidays and special days in the Czech Republic, USA and Great Britain. All these 3 states have their own special days, some of them are the same, some of them are similar and some of them are completely different. The similar ones are usually related with Christianity, for example Christmas or Easter. Every country also celebrates its own festivals, usually with some historical or political importance.

I will start with comparing Christmas in each country. We celebrate Christmas on December 24, particularly in the evening, called the Christmas Eve.

During the day, we usually eat the traditional Christmas lunch called Kuba, that’s made out of mushrooms and groats, because according to the tradition, you shouldn’t eat meat until the Christmas dinner. Or if you don’t eat anything, you’ll see a gold pig.

The dinner is festive and we usually eat fish soup and then a fried carp with potato salad. The meal sometimes differs in different families, our family for example don’t eat carp meat so we have salmon or chicken steaks.

After the dinner, the gifts are given out under the decorated Christmas tree. Children believe the presents are brought by the baby Jesus. Some people also keep traditional Christmas customs, for example cutting an apple or pouring lead. In our family, we used to let the small candles float in a nutshell on water when I was small.

These days, after the celebration, most families usually sit down in front of a TV watching fairytales and eating sweets. At midnight, some of them go to the Midnight Mass.

In the USA and also in Great Britain, they have the main day of Christmas on December 25. Children hang up stockings on the mantel-piece or at the end of their beds the day before and in the morning they find them full of sweets and tiny gifts. They believe that Father Christmas or Santa Claus, a cheerful fat man with a white beard, dressed in the red suit, rides through the air on a sledge drawn by reindeers and comes down the chimney to bring the presents. There is also a cystom of leasing out mince pies in Britain or cookies with milk in the USA for Santa Claus to eat when he comes down with the presents.

The most festive day of Christmas is Christmas Day on the 25 of December. In the morning children enjoy unwrapping presents and at midday Christmas dinner is a great occasion. It consist of roast turkey with chestnut stuffing and roast potatoes and traditional Christmas pudding.

Another important holiday is Easter. In the US and Great Britain, they decorate eggs on Saturday and on Sunday morning children look for these eggs that are hidden inside the house and in the garden. It is called an egg hunt. The tradition says that the eggs are hidden by the Easter Bunny during the night.

In our country, we celebrate Easter on Monday. In the morning, boys and men go from door to door and slap girls and women on their back with decorated sticks made from willow. Women give them decorated eggs and sweets, sometimes also alcohol. And in the afternoon they can also pour water on men according to the tradition.
