The very special network is the Internet. At first it was a military, latter also scientific network. Then the network has been provided to the universities, this event has started the civil usage of this network. At first, Internet has been built for the military purpose, this is the reason of its main structure. The army wanted a network that will be able to overcome any kind of attack. It means that it is not a line connection. It is like a web. Every computer has a connection to many others. It brings the possibility to transfer the data by many different traces. Nowadays the Internet is still based on the similar philosophy.
It is not one single network owned by one single owner. Internet is a package of standards and technologies, which allow connecting different types of computers by many different kinds of connections. It means that your computer can run a completely different system then the computer of your college. But both respect the same standard, allowing you both to send emails and share the same internet services. The connection of the parts of the internet is carried out by – metal cables, optical cables, wireless connections ( microwave..), satellites etc. These differ in speed, range and reliability. Again, the offer of the internet services is very wide and cannot be completely listed and described in this essay. The most important services are electronic mail (email), internet pages (www – word wide web), ftp (File Transfer Protocol – it is a special service used for transferring files, especially the large ones). Many other non-commercial or commercial (electronic shopping) services are based on the advanced use of these basic technologies.
The main advantage of all kinds of networks is sharing data. The access to the stored information is very fast and efficient. This is the most important part of the branch we are studying at this school.
The data are mostly stored in the databases, it means organised specialized system for storing large amounts of data. This is very important for museums and galleries. These institutions store and exhibit a large amount of items. They need to store very detailed information about every single piece of item. That is the reason why it is necessary to build a reliable information system. It is also very useful to have a network connection in order to share the information between the institutions. This can significantly facilitate the cooperation.
The computers are also a part of many analytical and imagining devices that are used in the process of restoring historical objects, such as paintings.
Creating specialized complicated databases is a task for programmers. It is very good that we have learned how these systems work and how a simple database is created. It helps to comprehend what the possibilities, limitations etc are like.
Computer literacy:
Being able to access the Internet, find, manage and edit digital information, join in communications and otherwise engage with an online information and communication network, are arguably aspects of what could be called digital literacy.
