The Smithsonian Institution was established in 1846 with money given to the United States by James Smithson. This institution is a complex of musseums with various orientation. Nowadays it holds more than 140 million artifacts. The institution also serves as a researchal centre.

Lincoln memorial is a tribute to the sixteenth president Abraham Lincoln and his activity during the Civil war. It lies on the line with the National Mall. The building has a form of the Greek temple with a giant marble statue of a seated Lincoln inside. Lincoln was also assasinated in the local Ford’s theatre in 1865, five years after the end of the war.

Arlington National Cemetery isn’t inside the city but it lies on the territory of the district. The cemetery functions as the nation’s military cemetery for the men and women who served in the Armed Forces. And it also became a popular visitor’s attraction with approximately four milion visitors a year because a grave of J. F. Kennedy is located there.

The Pentagon lies nearby the Arlington behind the borders of the capital city. It is the seat of the Department of Defense. The construction started on the 11th September 1941 and exactly 60 years later in 2001 the Pentagon was destroyed by the plane hijacked by the terrorists.

The second city, New York is definitely the most famous and visited city in the USA and also the most populous and largest one. It lies at the mouth of the Hudson and East River.

NY has a population more than 8.2 million. In the whole metropolitan area lives over 18 million people.

Originally, it was founded in 1625 by Dutch as New Amsterdam. In 1664, the British conquered the city and renamed it to New York.

NYC is often called The Big Apple due to its shape or the city that never sleeps thanks to its active nightlife.

The city consists of the five boroughs. The only one which isn’t located on island is the Bronx. Back in the 60’s, the Bronx was known as the most brutal part of NY with the highest level of criminality. It is very poor area with the huge number of Hispanic and African-American community. In 2005, approximately 1.3 million people lived there, of whom 48% was Hispanics, 36% was African-Americans and only 14% was white men. It’s because of the settlement of many imigrants there in the past.

Brooklyn is the city’s most populous borough and the second largest in area. Originally, it was small Dutch city Breuckelen, which was independent until 1898, when it was added to NY.

The heart of the city is Manhattan, which is situated on Manhattan Island and composed of the three parts, Uptown, Midtown and Downtown. It’s the commercial, financial and cultural centre of both the United States and the world. The city was built on a modern plan of streets and avenues. Streets run east-west and avenues north-south. Only a few of them, the oldest ones, have names, such as Wall Street or Broadway. Manhattan has many famous landmarks, tourist attractions, museums and universities. It is also home to the headquarters of the United Nations and to the consulate of the CR.
