years old to preschool is
optional. However,
American preschools are
not the same as our
preschools or
kindergartens.
Kindergartens are a part
of elementary school and
are compulsory for 5 to 6
year-old children.
Primary education in the United
Kingdom is compulsory for
children from the age of 5. They
attend primary school,
sometimes called elementary
school which are state-funded
and without any pay tuition fees.
Some children go to
independents schools which are
privately-owned and charged.
Independent schools for children
between 8-13 years old are
called 'prep schools'
(preparatory schools).
Unlike in the British
and Czech system,
kindergarten is a
part of elementary
school which also
comprises another 4
years of study.
Students in the United Kingdom
usually start secondary school at
the age of 11. There are many
types of secondary (high) schools
including comprehensive schools
and grammar schools, which are
free of charge. The independents
schools in secondary education are
called 'public schools' - they are
charge and are selective in which
students they take.
Secondary
education in the
United States is
mostly provided
by high schools.
These are the
last 4 years of
compulsory
education.
Like in the
United Kingdom,
there are tuition
fees for most
American
universities. At
the most
prestigious ones
like Yale,
Princeton or
Harvard, the fees
may reach tens
of thousands of
dollars per year.
The tuition fees
have been rising
in recent years
so more and
more students
have to take
student loans.
