There are fourteen regions (= administrative units) in the Czech Republic. The region I live in is called the Zlín Region (the Region of Zlín).

The Zlín Region is situated in the eastern part of the Czech Republic. It borders on Slovakia in the e____________(1). The administrative centre of the region is Zlín (= the region city). The region c____________(2) of four districts: Zlín, Uherské Hradiště, Kroměříž and Vsetín. The region is quite p____________(3) with tourists.

Interesting places

Zlín

The city of Zlín is situated on the Dřevnice R____________ (4). The development of the modern city is closely connected with the Baťa Shoe company. The city is home to Tomáš Baťa U__________ (5) in Zlín, which was founded in 2001. The places of interest include the Museum of Footwear, Baťa´s Skyscraper (also known as Building No. 21; it is currently the headquarters of the Zlín Region), Lešná Z___________ (6) and a nearby Lešná Castle. Every year, the Zlín Film Festival for Children and Youth t___________ (7) place in this city. Like in other large cities, there are a lot of shopping centres.

Uherské Hradiště

Uherské Hradiště lies on the M____________ (8) River. It is the centre of Moravian Slovakia, an ethnographic area known for its folk music and costumes, cultural traditions, and the production of wine. The town is also known for its theatre and a film f______________ (9) called the Summer Film School.

Buchlovice

Buchlovice is a small town in the Uherské Hradiště District. Visitors come here to visit Buchlovice C_____________ (10), which was built in the 18th century as a copy of an Italian villa in the baroque style.

The history of this place is closely connected with Buchlov Castle, which is situated nearby. Buchlov Castle was built in the 13th century.

Uherský Brod

Uherský Brod lies on the Olšava River. In this town you can find Comenius M_______________ (11), which provides information on the life and work of this great thinker. There are several primary and secondary schools in this town, including my school.

Luhačovice

Luhačovice is a spa town. It is especially famous for its mineral springs (the best known of them is Vincentka). Several important buildings were d_______________ (12) by the architect Dušan Jurkovič, e.g. the Jurkovič House. Probably the most famous visitor to Luhačovice, who came there many times, was the renowned c______________(13) Leoš Janáček. You can visit a music festival called “Janáček and Luhačovice“ in this town.

Vlčnov

Vlčnov, a v_______________(14) near Uherský Brod, is well known for its festival called “the Ride of the Kings“, which is h_____________ (15) every year at the end of May. The King is always a young b_______________ (16) (aged 10-12) dressed in a female folk costume. He rides a white horse and has a rose in his m_____________ (17). He is accompanied by a group of eighteen-year-old boys dressed in folk costumes. Their horses are d______________ (18) with colourful ribbons and paper flowers. They, together with other people in folk costumes, go round the village, cry out old lines to celebrate the King and ask the people watching the Ride to give them some m______________ (19). Visitors to this festival can see performances of folk ensembles and buy a souvenir or a local speciality.
