Oliver Cromwell was a great admirer of Milton (Milton was blind)
Milton lived in isolation, very private life
He dictated his words because he was blind
1674 – Milton died
Sonnet on blindness – When I Considered How My Light Is Spent
Samson Agonistes – Samson in agony – Samson (Bible) was a warrior with long hair and his power was connected with his length of hair, his wife cut his hair, he was taken to prison, he was blind (like Milton), there his hair grew again to the length, then he was strong again and he killed his enemies
Paradise Lost – much bigger poem, its epic – poem describes events in history – epic about man’s first disobedience – they disobey god – as a punishment they are expelled from the garden of Eden
Paradise Regained - Pandemonium – prison – Lucifer wanted revenge – the poem doesn’t end in pessimist way , it is about the second chance given to humanity
John Milton – When I Considered How My Light Is Spent
When I consider how my light is spent – metaphor – how my energy is spent and also how his vision is spent
Ere half my days in this dark world and wide, - the world seems wide when person is blind, he has no possibility to measure limits
And that one talent which is death to hide – we all have a talent – thanks to god, we should increase this talent
Lodged with me useless, though my soul more bent – he didn’t use his talent, before he couldn’t write, his soul was calling him to write
To serve therewith my Maker, and present
My true account, lest He returning chide; - true account – his feelings, opinions, chide = scold (nadávat)
“Doth God exact day-labor, light denied?” – doth = does,
I fondly ask. But Patience, to prevent – fondly = lovingly
That murmur, soon replies, “God doth not need
Either man’s work or His own gifts. Who best – God doesn’t need gifts,
Bear His mild yoke, they serve Him best. His state – yoke =
Is kingly: thousands at His bidding speed,
And post o’er land and ocean without rest;
They also serve who only stand and wait.”

The cult of reason
From extreme to extreme - From reason we moved to sentiment (romanticism)
English romanticism is more precocious
Romanticism starts from disappointment – reason was not enough to bring happiness to them, some aspects cannot be explained by reason
The main thing is the feeling, the emotion
Escape – to nature/ to love/ to dreams, visions/ to past, myths
Industrial revolution - James Watt invented the steam engine
Process and technology → unemployment, poverty, people end up on the street
1789 – The beginning of French revolution – Prison of Bastille
The Terror – fright, fear – it is better to punish innocent than to let a guilty man escape → it was in order to fright population and to not be involved in the revolution
