Unit 6.1 – environmental technology – water technology
tap water - basic water from the depths in the buildings
aquifer - an underground body of rock that absorbs and holds water and can serve as a water supply
faeces - excrements, solid waste that body gets rid of
fertiliser - a substance that is used in agriculture to make plants grow better
watercourse - a channel through which water flows
cooling tower - a system that removes heat from water in an industrial facility
fungicide - a chemical used in agriculture to kill fungi
rubbish dump - a place where waste material is disposed
power station - an industrial facility where electricity is generated
manure - organic matter (solid waste from animals) that is used to supply nutrients to crops
sewage (splašky) - a mixture of used water from kitchens, bathrooms, human waste etc.
eutrophication - the addition of nutrients (especially phosphorus) which helps plants to grow that can cause taking oxygen from water and eventually killing the fish and other animals
Great Pacific garbage patch - a huge island of plastic waste (located in Pacific Ocean)
acid rain - rain that contains a large amount of harmful and acidic chemicals as a result of burning coal, oil etc.
drain (odtok) - pipe carrying away wastewater
per capita – by head, for each person
enterprise - the project, and effort
aeration tank - Tank where wastewater or sludge is mixed with air or oxygen
digester - a huge vessel in which substances are treated with heat, enzymes, etc.
irrigation (závlaha) - a system of watering
scale up – zvýšit, zvětšit, navýšit
to snag – zachytit se, natrhnout se
approximately - close to the right value/amount/number but not exactly the right number
scarcity – (nedostatek, nouze) - situation in which something is not easy to find or get
consumption - the act of using, eating, drinking something
to sweep -prohledat, zamést
water treatment plant - the facility that removes pollutants from water
