2) Language for writing an abstract
2 Read the following sample abstract. Underline the words and phrases (usually general
expressions, mostly verbs and nouns) that might be useful when writing your own abstract.

Sample abstract 4 This study investigated the impact of Project-based Learning (PBL) on students’ motivation in learning
writing at Soc Trang College of Education. The targeted population consisted of 55 English major
sophomore students. To assess the ef ects of the intervention, the modified 20-item pre- and post-
intervention student surveys adapted from Gardner (1985) were used as well as the semi-structured
interviews with 20 students. The nine-week intervention of PBL consisted of three projects with
cooperative learning activities, authentic, purposeful tasks, and learners’ self-determination. Although
this study was limited in duration and scope, the results clearly support earlier research on positive
ef ects of PBL on learner motivation. The study revealed that the students had positive at itudes toward
learning writing with increases in motivational intensity as well as their desire to learn the language.
However, it was found that the participants did not value the close relationship with their teacher as a
