Music as a performance art We can listen to the live music or to the music that was recorded previously. One of the most common ways to listen to recorded music is on the internet via video-sharing websites. The advantage is that we can find there almost every song we want to listen to, but we need to have an internet connection for it to work. W e can listen to our favourite music in different w ays. The most up-to-date way of listening to music is by using music streaming services. They usually have free or paid memberships and their biggest advantage is that we don't have to download any music to our device. Listening to music on a electronic device has many advantages, like no ads interrupting the music and no need to have a internet connection. It is the best option for traveling, because the devices are very small today and using headphones, we can get our music wherever we are. The disadvantage is that first we have to download all the music we want to listen to. Most of the world's greatest artists have performed at least once in the Czech Republic, in most cases in our biggest multi-use arena called O2 Arena. Music festivals If the band we like is not among the most popular, we can attend a music festival where they perform. Music festivals are characterized by multiple performing artists and sometimes, it's split over several days, a weekend for example. Some of the best known Czech music festivals are "Rock For People" or "Colours of Ostrava". The world's most famous music festival is probably Glastonbury, which is held every year in Great Britain. Usually it's cheaper than attending each concert. Today, music festivals are one of the most popular types of live-music events. In case of a really special artist, the ticket price could reach thousands of crowns. The Baroque period was an era of art between roughly 1600 and 1750. Opera and ballet were the most common musical forms. Classicism was an era of music in the second half of the 18th century and the early 19th century. The most important sign of this period is the development of public concerts. It was influenced pretty much by the philosophy of Ancient Greece and Rome. All periods of classical music are full of very special composers. Some of them were truly exceptional and geniuses. Country music has its origins in Southern United States and especially in Nashville, which is often called the "home of country music". Country music developed in the 1920s, gained its biggest popularity in 1940s and was influenced mostly by folk music and blues. One of the most common instruments used by country musicians is the guitar. Country music Jazz Blues is a genre that was founded in the African-American communities in the Southern USA at the end of the 19th century. Blues is a combination of traditional African and European music. Nirvana, an American rock band, and its lead singer Kurt Cobain were one of the symbols of the 90s. Nirvana broke up in 1994 as the result of Cobain's suicide. Rock music Johnny Cash was an American singer and country music icon who also created blues and rock and roll songs. He died in 2003. Electronic music was greatly influenced by blues - it was created at the beginning of the 20th century in the African-American communities in the Southern USA, as was blues. One of the earliest jazz centres was New Orleans. The piano, trumpet and saxophone are the most popular jazz instruments. Rock and roll is a relatively new genre that was created in the 20th century. Composers and musicians use electronic instruments to perform this kind of music, but some elements of electronic music were used by famous pop and rock musicians as well. Louis Armstrong was probably the most influential figure in jazz music. His songs "Blueberry Hill" and "Wonderful World" are internationally known as is his signature deep voice.
