Sport plays a very important part in the lives of British people, with
football being by far the most popular, especially in England and
Scotland. Every Saturday afternoon from late August until the end of
May (known as the football season), people go to matches or watch
live matches on television. “Playing the game” is a very common
sports expression that you will often hear. This is the same as “fair
play”. To the British, this means placing special value on playing
according to the rules and without cheating or dishonesty.
In Britain, there are several types of football. Let’s take a closer look
at these.
The two football organisations
Professional football is controlled by two organisations, the Football
League and the Football Association (FA).
In England and Wales, there are 93 teams in the League, organised
into four divisions: the Premier League, the First Division, the Second
Division and the Third Division. In Scotland there are 38 teams in
three divisions. All the teams in the League play regularly against
each other in what is called the League Championship. The team
with the most points at the end of the football season is the League
Champion.

The other important football
organisation is the FA Cup. This is
open to all amateur football teams
belonging to the FA as well as the
93 teams in the Football League.
All these teams play against each
other during the football season in
a so-called knockout competition.
The two remaining teams that
have not lost a match by the end
of the football season play against
each other in the FA Cup Final at Wembley Stadium in London on the
last Saturday afternoon in May. “The Cup”, as it is locally called, is
always a major national sporting event which is watched by millions
of people on television.
