B: That ‘that’ was the clock striking two, Frank! Go to sleep!
A: Sorry, dear. Didn’t know it was so late. My big day tomorrow, you know. Ah well. Goodnight.
B: It’s a lovely speech, Frank.
Dialogue 8 but /bət/
A: But I can’t. I’m sorry, but I can’t.
B: But you must.
A: I’d like to help you. But I can’t.
B: But I’m depending on you. We’re all depending on you.
A: I’ll do what I can, but not that.
B: But we’re all friends.
A: If you were really my friends, you wouldn’t ask me to do that.
B: But none of us is in your position.
A: Yes, I realise that. But I can’t abuse that position.
B: Everyone else does.
A: But I’m not ‘everyone else’. I’m me. And I still have a conscience!
