* TYPES OF MEDIA, THE ROLE OF MEDIA IN OUR LIVES

- types of media: internet, daily press, magazines, television and radio broadcasting

- communication - the various methods of sending information between people and places, especially phones,

computers, radio, etc

- mass media - refers to the way information is communicated to people

- it includes newspapers, magazines, television, radio, and the Internet

- role of mass media: the mass media has a great importance in our society. All people around the world are

curious and want to be informed about the world’s events. That’s the reason why they read

newspapers, listen to the radio or watch TV. Press is the oldest way of distributing information.

TV

- nowadays, television has a very important place in our lives. It brings us peace, entertainment and education. The Czech Republic has two public service stations - ČT1, ČT2 and two commercial stations - Nova, Prima.

- there is much less advertising on public stations than there is on the commercial ones

- ČT2 is targeted at more demanding viewers, showing subtitled films, documentaries, music programmes, dramas and concerts

- morning broadcasting normally starts at six, then follow soap operas, series, documentaries, debates, bedtime stories (večerníček)

- the prime time (hlavní vysílací čas) comes at about half past seven when the main news block (zprávy) begins

- in Britain there are five “terrestrial” (pozemních) channels which shows programme of general interest like sport or currents affairs:

- BBC is for people with minority, interest showing documentaries, travel programmes, serious drama, music and

foreign films, there are three commercial stations: ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5

Radio

- radio is a powerful thing, and although it has no screen like television does, it may broadcast 24 hours a day

- most people are too busy to watch TV during a day but they can turn on their radios when they are working,

cooking, even in the night

Radio and television

- Modern life is closely connected with radio and television as sources of information and entertainment.

- sorts of TV programmes: -soap operas, cookery programmes, game shows, weather forecast, music programmes, nightly news, commercials, educational programmes, hit parade, films – comedies, thrillers, documentaries, reality shows

Disadvantages or advantages of watching the tv

-advantages: a lot of people seek relief from their routine live

it is quite comfortable and it does not take so much time than going to the cinema

a good choice of TV channels, satellite channels, cable TV

a source of entertainment or just a background noise

by watching daily affairs, we are kept informed and up-to-date with breaking news around the world

-disadvantages: some people become addicted

children spend much time in front o the screen, it doesn’t develop their fantasy

it spoils our eyes
