the town of CB was founded by King Přemysl Otakar II on the confluence of the Malše and Vltava rivers in 1265
The most important sights in CB are situated in the historical centre.
The heart of the town is Přemysl Otakar II Square, which is one of the largest squares in the Czech Republic. Historical houses were originally Gothic, got Renaissance arcades and were mostly rebuilt in the Baroque or Classic styles.
The town hall is the most significant building in the square. It is the seat of the town administration and has Baroque looks.
In the middle of the square we can see the Samson’s Fountain and the erratic block. There is a superstition connected with it – you won’t find the right way home if you step on it after 10 p. m.
The symbol of CB is the Black Tower, a 72m-tall watchtower built in the 16th century. It offers a nice view of CB and the landscape around the town.
Near the tower we can visit the largest church in CB – St. Nicolas Cathedral.
Another famous sign in CB is the Gothic Salt Warehouse, which is near the famous pub called the Meat Shops (Masné krámy).
Other interesting buildings in the centre of CB are e. g., the South Bohemian Museum, the South Bohemian Theatre, the House of Culture Metropol and Planetarium.
There is also a technical monument. A horse-drawn railway between CB and Linz, which was the first railway of the European continent.
CB is an important cultural, educational and industrial centre of South Bohemia. There is a university, big factories such as Koh-i-noor, Bosch, Budvar Brewery. A well-known agricultural exhibition Země živitelka takes place there every year.
