Most people around the world seem to think that the
typical English breakfast consists of eggs, bacon,
sausages, fried bread, mushrooms and baked beans all
washed down with a cup of tea or coffee. But a typical
breakfast in an English home nowadays is more likely
to be a bowl of cereals, a slice of toast with marmalade,
orange juice and a cup of tea or coffee.
For most working people, lunch is often a light snack
consisting of sandwiches or a pie eaten at a local pub.
Nearly always, there is a selection of pork pies and steak
and kidney pies (stewed steak and kidney topped with a
pastry. But on Sundays, the main meal of the day is eaten
at midday, and is usually roast beef, Yorkshire pudding
(made from a batter of flour, eggs and milk, and cooked
in the oven with the roast beef) as well as two kinds of vegetables. This is followed by
a dessert such as a fruit salad or a lemon meringue pie with fresh cream.
Dinner in most families used to be meat, potatoes and
vegetables served with gravy followed by a sweet dessert.
But today, more and more people like to eat oriental style
food or pasta. Take-away meals are also popular especially
among people who come home late from work. Today, there
are many Indian, Italian, Chinese and Greek take-away
restaurants. Especially in the north of England, fish and chips
– traditionally England’s national dish – represents the classic
take-away food.
