→ He suspects that most criminals know that crime doesn’t pay. (the framing clause is not in past
tense → we don't use backshi )
‘Punctuality I find difficult,’ he often says. ‘This is my everlasting problem.’
→ He o en says that he finds punctuality difficult. That is his everlas ng problem.
‘Go away,’ I shouted, ‘I don´t need you until tomorrow.’
→ I shouted to him to go away. I didn´t need him un l the next day.
(to report a command, we use either to-infinitive ↑ or a nominal clause with should ↓)
→ I shouted that he should go away I didn´t need him un l the next day.
She said, ‘I’l go if only she asks me.’
→ She said she would go if only she asked her.
She said, ‘I’d have gone if only she had asked me.’
→ She said she would have gone if only she had asked her.
(past conditional → perfect infini ve; for present we would use would + go ←infini ve)
He said, “They have already finished the work.”
→ He said (that) they had already finished the work.
He said, “Construction on your house wil begin as soon as the lumber arrives.”
→ He said (that) the Construc on on my house would begin as soon as the lumber had arrived. (ADV
clause of time, referring to the future – we use future tens in the main clause and present or present
perfect in the subordinate one -> we backshift to past perfect)
The technician said, “The laboratory has already sent in the report.”
