• during Cuba crisis (Carribean crisis) in 1962, there was controversy between the United States and the USSR concerning deploying of the rockets partial nuclear test ban treaty

• JFK helped to improve the political East – West relations

• he proposed The Civil Rights Bill which was passed after his death in 1964

Vietnam War

• Started officially in 1964; Vietnam was divided into the North and the South supported by the United States; the cruel war started. After the attack of the Northern Vietnam troops; despite a considerable strenght of the Americans, they didn´t manage to win, moreover, the war aroused much protest (also due to medialization), esp. among students and black Americans

• in 1973 the cease-fire agreement was signed and by 1975 Vietnam was united

• before the 1968 presidential elections, Robert Kennedy, the brother of the assassinated president and a prospective Democratic candidate was also assassinated; the election was won by Richard Nixon(Rep.), later re-elected in 72

• Watergate affair (1974) – During the presidential elections in 1972 some Republican agents broke into the headquaters of the Democrats in order to tap the phone lines and bug the rooms - Nixon witheld the evidence trying to cover the whole thing up
