14. NEW ZEALANDNew Zealand is situated in the South Pacific, south-east of Australia. It consists of 2 large islands – North and South Island. The islands are separated by Cook Strait. New Zealand is well known for its beautiful scenery. There are active volcanoes, deep glacial lakes, geysers= hot springs, amazing fjords and long sandy beaches. The biggest mountains are the Southern Alps on the South Island with the highest peak Mount Cook. The longest river is the Waikato and the largest lake is Taupo, both on the North Island. New Zealand has a very pleasant and healthy climate with plenty of sunshine and good rainfall. Summers are warm, winters are mild, but in the mountains winters are cold with suitable snow for skiing. The population of New Zealand is only about 4 milion. Most of the population is of European origin, only about 13% is formed by original inhabitants – called Maoris. They have the same rights as the white New Zealanders, but they have got their own culture and language. New Zealanders are said to be very friendly and easy-going people. The majority of the people live on the North Island, mainly for its mild climate. The capital city is Wellington and the largest city is Auckland. The largest cities of the South Island are Christchurch and Dunedin. New Zealand is a rich agricultural country. It specializes in sheep breeding and in production of wool. There are more sheep than inhabitants in New Zealand – twenty sheep for every person. In the past few years, thanks to the film Lord of the Rings, which was made in New Zealand, tourism has increased a lot too. Thanks to its long isolation from the other world, in New Zealand we can also find some amazing animals, which don’t live anywhere else. Canada is situated in the northern part of North America. It borders on the USA in the south and on the Arctic ocean in the north. Canada is a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. The official head of the country is the British Queen Elizabeth II, who is represented by the Governor General (=generální guvernér).The main symbol of the country is the Canadian flag, which is red and white, with a red maple leaf in the middle. Canada is the second largest country in the world. It is divided into ten provinces and three territories. The population is about 35 million people. Most of inhabitants live in the south, near the border with the USA. Native Canadians - Inuits - live in arctic and subarctic areas. There are two official languages in Canada – English and French. The capital of Canada is Ottawa, but the largest cities are Toronto and Montreal. Montreal is the second largest French-speaking city in the world (after Paris). In Toronto, by the lake Ontario, there is the Canadian National Tower (CNT), which is the third tallest structure in the world. It is a telecommunications tower and also a popular tourist attraction, because there is a revolving restaurant and a glass observation deck at the top. Canada is famous for its beautiful countryside. There are a lot of lakes, for example Great Lakes in the south-east, Slave and Bear Lakes in the north-west, and also high mountain ranges, such as the Rocky Mountains and the Mackenzie Mountains. There are about thirty national parks. Canada’s economy is based on natural resources (coal, oil, gas, zinc, silver and gold), agriculture – Canada is the world’s second largest exporter of wheat, and forestry. It is among the richest countries in the world.
