Washington DC is the capital of the USA. It is not as large as New York, its population is about 3,5 mil. In Washington there are the most important buildings in the USA: The White House – the residence of the American president, the Capitol – the residence of the Congress, the Pentagon – the centre of military forces. In Washington there are no factories or industry. But there are a lot of monuments. The most famous are monuments of American presidents: Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and Jefferson Memorial. George Washington was the first American president. He chose the place for the future capital. His monument is a high white column and around it there are 50 flags – one for each state. Abraham Lincoln was the 16th American president. He gave the freedom to slaves in the 19th century. His monument is a white marble temple with Lincoln’s statue inside. Jefferson was the third American president. He wrote the Declaration of Independence. His memorial is also a white temple, but it is round. The memorial is the most beautiful in spring. 13. AUSTRALIAIt‘s situated in the southern hemisphere, southeast of Asia, between the Pacific and the Indian oceans. Australia is a dominium belonging to the British Commonwealth of Nations. At the head of the state there is a Governor General who is a deputy to the British Queen. Australia is a federation of 6 states – New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania – and 3 territories – the Northern Territory, the Australia Capital Territory and the Coral Sea Islands Territory. The population is about 19 milions. About 90% of the population come from European backgrounds, around 7% from Asia and only 2% are Aborigines, the first inhabitans of Australia. The density of population is very low. Most people live in towns on the cost, because the centre of the country called the outback is very dry. There are 2 large deserts there – Great Sandy Desert and Great Victoria Desert. Australia has only 2 big rivers: the Murray and the Darling. The highest mountains are the Australian Alps with the highest peak Mount Kosciusko. The capital city is Canberra but the largest city is Sydney. Other big cities are Melbourne and Brisbane in the southeast, Adelaide in the south, Perth in the southwest and Darwin in the north. Australia is a very rich country. Gold, silver, copper, zinc, iron and a number of other metals, are found there. Australia has a highly developt agriculture. It specializes mainly in sheep-breeding. There are ten times more sheep than inhabitants in Australia. Australia is the world’s biggest producer of wool. Due to Australia’s long isolation from other continents there still live many kinds of animals and plants which can’t be seen anywhere else. For example kangaroos, koala bears, wombats – they’re marsupials, they carry their babies in a a special pouch on their bellies. Koalas are grey and have big ears. They feed on leaves of eucalypt trees. Kangaroos are bigger and have very strong back legs and a tail, which help them to jump very high and move very quickly.Platypus – one of the strangest animals in the world. It’s a mammal but it lays eggs.Echidna – its body is covered with spines it has a long nose and long sticky tongue, which it uses to gather ants and termites.Emu – a large bird, about 1,80m tall it can’t fly.Ayers Rock – huge red rock in the middle of the outback. It’s over 2 miles long and over 500 metres highSydney Opera House – a unique buildings designed by a Dutch architect in the shape of several shells.Sydney Harbour Bridge – can be easily recognized thanks to its typical arch, which is 134 metres above the water level.The Blue Mountains – they are situated 65km west of Sydney. From a distance the mountains seem blue which is caused by sunlight passing through droplets of oil evaporating from leaves of eucalypt trees.The Great Barrier Reef – stretches 2 000km along the Queensland’s coast. For tourists, who want to explore the wonders of the reef, there are a lot of boats, which offer snorkling and diving trips to the reef.Aborigenes – first inhabitants of Australia, they settled there about 40 000 years ago. Their way of life didn’t change for at least 2 500 generations because of almost total isolation from the outside world. At present time there are about 260 000 aborigines in Australia. They have got their own culture and languages. Their culture was and still is based on a deep and strong spiritual life and traditions.boomerang – used for hunting.
