Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Během 2. světové války se americké ozbrojené síly proměnily z malých a špatně vyzbrojených v největší sílu schopnou zásahu kdekoliv po celé planetě. K tomu sloužily desítky základen v zahraničí a skupiny letadlových lodí, jež stále představují neocenitelnou výhodu. Od pozemního vojska se oddělilo rychle se vyvíjející a rostoucí letectvo, jež je v současnosti největší a nejmodernější na světě. Během studené války se USA postavily do čela západního světa s úkolem zastavit šíření komunismu, po skončení studené války a rozpadu východního bloku stojí USA před hrozbou terorismu a znovu jako vedoucí mocnost hodlá s relativně novým nepřítelem skoncovat. S tím úzce souvisí i zabránění šíření zbraní hromadného ničení, aby se nedostaly do rukou teroristů nebo režimů je podporujících.

Americké ozbrojené síly jsou plně profesionální, mají nejmodernější výstroj a výzbroj. Integrace zpravodajských a informačních systémů, systém velení a struktura nemají konkurenci nikde na světě. Vojenská převaha jak v konvenčních, tak strategických zbraních zaručuje, že se nikdo nepokusí vést proti USA konvenční boj. Všechny složky ozbrojených sil USA v současné době procházejí zásadní reorganizací, jejíž cílem je v období po skončení studené války vytvořit nové struktury i operační plány optimalizované pro rychlé nasazení v nejrůznějších oblastech světa. Obrana USA se od konce studené války přesouvá od politiky odstrašování k prevenci. Preventivní údery, jež po teroristických útocích 11. 9. 2001 prezident Bush zařadil do vojenské doktríny, však vyvolávají nesouhlas po celém světě.
