– Azlatlan Movement
- movement initially of Mexican-Americans and Latino (people who speak Spanish)
- Latino is nowadays the 2nd large minority group in America
- during the war: Mexico lost 2/5 of its territory (Arizona, California, New Mexico, Texas)
- that was the 1st wave of Spanish speaking people who became citizens (USA accepted the borders)
- the 2nd wave of Spanish speaking immigrants came with influence of the USA in Porto Rico and Cuba
(when Cuba became a communist country in 60’s, many Cubans left the country)
- and the 3rd wave came through economic immigration – from Mexico and countries of central and South America
(people jumped on trade trains – there are of course lots of accidents)

- this border with Mexico and USA – there is desert (many people try to cross the desert, even pregnant women
because the law in the USA – who is born in the USA is a citizen of States)
- all these groups together constitute (představují) the Latinos/Hispanics
- among these Spanish speakers, the most coherent group and most aware group of their identity are
Mexican-Americans – the war (1848) was a war of conquest (dobytí) - We did not come to the USA, the USA came
to us, we are not immigrants
- movement of emancipation (zrovnoprávnění) of Mexican-Americans – initiated by students and university
professors from Colorado (the aim was: they wanted cultural rights, they wanted to be allowed to use Spanish
in courts and in schools - bilingual education, recognized and appreciated heritage (dědictví))
