1964 – Civil Rights Act
- signed by:
Lyndon Johnson (36th President)
- ensured: black people equal treatment in front of laws
- Kennedy sympathised with blacks and worded out the plan that blacks will be treated equally – murdered
Black Panther movement – representatives: Bobby Seale and Huey Newton
- was influenced by Marxism, ideas from Chinese communist
- they considered that Marxist revolutionist should take place in the USA (the only way of getting black rights)
- popular: organised a network of social assistance (helped feminists, poor to go to school)

- on the other hand they were considered to be dangerous
- FBI put a mole (spy) among them, which created distrust (the movement doesn’t exist any more)
- but the Malcom X movement still exist and it’s very active
Malcom X
- born in a poor and modest black family
- little thefts, involved with drugs – put in prison where he stayed in a cell with much older black Muslim prisoner
- they had lots of discussion and the Muslim became a real father to him
- when he was released from prison, he changed his name: to “X”
- he changed his name because he didn’t want to be called what reminded him of slavery (it was a drama for him)
- Malcom refused his real surname “Little” – when the Blacks were brought from Africa, they were obliged to use
the name given by the slave owner (they had to forget their identity, American identity of slaves was erased)
- or some of them adopted symbols of American history but the African names were forgotten
- (novel Roots by African writer - legends in family about his African roots - travelled to Africa and found people
with that name - legend was true)
