society where the father dies and the family falls into ownership of his oldest brother
he realised that the relationship of the sons and daughters towards parents are not identical
Oedipus Complex = mother-son relationship in childhood (the boy experiences that he’s attracted to his mother
and the little boy wants to replace the father, becomes adult and he wants unconsciously to kill his father)
castration anxiety = when the infantile male becomes aware of differences between male and female genitalia he
assumes that the female's penis has been removed and becomes anxious that his penis will be cut off by his rival, the
father figure, as punishment for desiring the mother figure
Electra Complex = father-daughter relationship in childhood (the girl experiences that she’s attracted to her
father, she envies her mother, she’s not competitive with the father because she’s attracted to him)
penis envy = refers to the reaction of the female/young girl during development when she realizes that she does not
possess a penis; the idea was that females/girls envied mostly their fathers with a penis and they blame their
mothers for “castrating” as punishment for desiring the father figure
it can be applied on a literature of family content
2. HAROLD BLOOM
the literary history is an illustration of Oedipus complex
young writers who were admirers envied older and more famous writers
they symbolically wanted to kill them (symbolically the older writers are like fathers)
this theory wasn’t applied on women writers because they don’t compete with male writers and secondly there
weren’t so many women writers in the literary world in a history
