balances demand and desires of ID and SUPEREGO
»
a layer in our conscious
»
ideally, the ego works by reason because it is the decision-making component of personality
»
considers social realities and norms, etiquette and rules in deciding how to behave as a member of society
• the SUPEREGO = a model of the self that we should be according to morality principle
»
incorporates the values and morals of society, culture, mass-media and church
»
the society puts a pressure on us to behave in a certain way, to move in a certain way, to interact with
others in a certain way
»
we try our best to conform (přizpůsobit se) to the superego
»
the model of societies differs in every culture depending on geography and time
»
there may be a conflict between the superego and the ego (we are meant to be heterosexual)
»
example 1: a mommy is about to give a birth to a boy so she buys clothes in a blue colour
»
example 2: girls are expected to play with dolls and not coming home with torn clothes
SUBLIMATION
psychological process through which we replace certain ideas, desires that cannot be fulfilled because they are
not acceptable in the society
sublimation helps to survive because the forbidden activity needs to be replaced by something that helps to
damage the unaccepted desires
solution: art activities because only humans create art, animals cannot create art
example: someone loves her/his relative but according to culture and biological reasons the marriage and
sexual activities are forbidden among members of the family. The desire of loving her/his cousin, that is
forbidden, has to be replaced by painting, drawing dancing, singing etc.
FAMILY LIFE
Freud lived most of his time in Austria and before he left to England, he realised the structure of a family
nuclear family: father, mother, and children
