CONSEQUENCES FOR BLACK PEOPLE AFTER THE CIVIL WAR
southern people weren’t happy about the result of the civil war
they tried to diminish the result by a state legislation (Jim Crow Legislation)
1)
Jim Crow Legislation (discrimination of black people): 1876 – 1965
1876 - it was accepted by southern states after the war to rebuilt the South
local legislation, which prevented black people from using what they gained
Jim Crow = a black character from the theatre (big, black, monkey, looking stupid who made people laugh)
the legislation tried to fake the result of the civil war through federal legislation
the legislation recognised that slavery was abolished but there were other restrictions
African-Americans were
equal but separated in public space (it wasn’t applied on private space)
grandfather clause = if the grandfather could vote in 1965, the younger generations could do so too
but it was unlikely because most blacks used to be slaves and gained this right in 1866 by The Civil Right
