Abraham Lincoln 

came from a very poor family, they lived in woods, he made living by cutting trees, he had to really work hard 

on the other hand, he was ambitious: he went to a lawyer school and became a lawyer 

he met an older rich lady, who married him and helped him in a career 

she was well connected in the American elite 

he was introduced to the right people and became a candidate and then he was elected as a president 

Lincoln was known to have had ideas about abolishing slavery 

people from the North supported him because they needed those people to work for them in factories 

the northern states built a blockade so that the southern states could no longer send ships to Europe with 
cotton and coffee and sell their products and earn money to survive 

when he was elected as a president, it was clear that he would do something against slavery 

the southern states wanted to defend themselves and wanted to get separated from the Union (Washington) 

the federal authority (Washington) couldn’t allow this separation 

black people wanted to fight for the North but Lincoln was very reluctant (zdráhající se) to give them weapons 

the Union needed them and Lincoln gave a permission: the black men could be drafted (vybráni) 

question: “What will they do with the guns after war?!” “We will teach them how to use them!” 

the authority of Washington over other states was reinforced (posílený) and nowadays to be challenged

the battle lasted 3 days and it was a cruel battle 

many people died in three days but the North won the battle 

at the end of the battle, Abraham Lincoln made a speech where he spoke about the future of the country
