Roger Williams - the state and the church should be separate

religious issues – in churches (religion should be private, the church must rely on own sources)

in public schools (paid from taxes) - you cannot teach religion

known for his vigorous support for the Salem witch trials

they had ideas that stand out and they were judged and burnt alive

1664 – New Amsterdam captured by Britain and renamed to New York 
 
1670 – Britons founded new colonies of North and South Carolina
